Exclusive Interview: The Zombie Behind Lucio Fulci’s Twitter Account

While reading our Twitter account a few weeks back, I was surprised to see Lucio Fulci show up in my Twitter Feed. Lucio Fulci?! I thought, how can this be possible, the man has been dead since 1996. I decided to do some investigating and contacted the owner of this Twitter account. The owner of this account is Marcelo Basaure from Argentina; a huge Fulci fan that just wants to help spread the gospel of the Godfather of Gore to as many people as possible. What follows is my interview with Marcelo conducted last week:

How did you get involved with Lucio Fulci’s Twitter account? Were you contacted by his estate or is this something that you created and run on your own as a fan of his work?
The idea of creating the twitter account came to me one night, I think it was 4 am. I was thinking of his films and it hurt a bit that many of his films have been left in oblivion. I wanted to rescue them from oblivion and expose his films to a broader audience and show that the art of his movies is still alive.

You know, my favorite movie is “The House By The Cemetery”. It was the first film I saw of Fulci, and my first impressions after viewing it were not good. Later I began to admire that film, every moment and every scene. It’s magic dazzled me with its hidden message, the children’s game between the death and blood and it’s conclusion is so poetic. So I said to myself: I have to honor the memory of Fulci in some way and the best way for me to do that was via Twitter.
I really like that the account came to be widely publicized, I hope it helps to share Fulci material with others. The best part of running this Twitter account is sharing the admiration of Fulci’s work around the world.

It is the creation of a fan but I try to be as serious and respected as possible, I think Lucio Fulci would be proud of all who keep the flame of the fears that he created burning strong.

Have you had any contact with Fulci or his family in the past before you started the account?
Not really, obviously it would have been great to meet Lucio, you can see in the interviews he has done that he was a very passionate individual.

What about now, has anyone from Fulci’s camp reached out to you since creating this Twitter account?
Not yet, but I think that will happen at some point, the account is relatively new, just over two weeks. I hope to continue to grow every day and build a community of Fulci fans and followers. I think he deserves much more respect than the film industry has given him. I would love to be in contact with Antonella Fulci; his daughter. I’m hoping she discovers this Twitter account and approves of what I’m doing.

Do you get a ton of tweets and responses from Fulci fans via Twitter?
Definitely yes! I try to find as much information about Fulci as I can. I’m always looking for photos, interviews, soundtracks, and quotes etc. The important thing for me is to share the collective thoughts, opinions and ideas of Fulci fans worldwide using this account. Every day there are new comments from people who do not know that this is a Fulci homage account, but he is named in their tweets. I retweet those opinions and comments so that they may be seen by all followers of the Godfather of Gore.

What’s the strangest thing someone has sent to you via Twitter since running this account?
Nothing overly strange, but lots of animated gifs of Fulci gore scenes from his films!
At times I try to lighten up the account by saying things like “This account is managed by Lucio Fulci’s Zombie!” and “Tweets from The Beyond!”

Do you have any other affiliations with Fulci’s work or estate etc outside of Twitter? (Web Site, Facebook Page, Blog etc)
Yes, I created a SoundCloud account where we will gradually upload songs from Fulci’s original soundtracks. Currently there are two tracks up on the site, and I am hoping to add more content soon like themes and backgrounds etc.I am also asking fans to send their top 5 Fulci films to the following email: thehousebythecemetery@yahoo.com.

In the search for material two Lucio Fulci pages I found interesting are:
http://www.shockingimages.com/fulci/menu.html
There is a comprehensive French site also, but unfortunately it’s only in French:
http://luciofulci.fr/

Well I’m sure Lucio would be very happy to have a Twitter presence and someone as dedicated and passionate about his work as you running his account and sharing his creative madness with as many fans as possible! From one Fulci fan to another, thanks for working so hard to keep Fulci’s legacy alive, and thank you for taking the time to talk with us today.
It was my pleasure, thank you for contacting me and for helping spread the Godfather of Gore’s legacy!
