Kick-Ass Movie Review

Story

Kick-Ass Poster
Shut Up. Kick Ass.

A nerdy teenage boy decides the world needs real life super heroes. Armed with nothing but determination and a strong will, he dons a scuba suit and transforms into the superhero Kick-Ass and proceeds to help the helpless and clean up his city for the greater good. He soon meets other like-minded “super-heroes” and together they tackle the city’s most diabolical villain.

Characters

The characters of Kick-Ass make this movie so enjoyable. Dave Lizewski (Aaron Johnson) plays the likable hero Kick-Ass. He’s shy, he’s awkward around girls, and he loves comic books. He’s 90% of adolescent males in school. I immediately began rooting for him, and was happy and excited as he triumphed, and was shocked and worried when he did not. I thought he did a great job in the lead role, and look forward to seeing him again in other projects. While Dave was a great character that I really enjoyed, I felt that Mindy McCready (Chloe Moretz; Let Me In) was easily the star of the show. What an unbelievable amount of charisma and presence she has! Most of my laughs came from her witty lines of dialogue and my “holy shit!” moments were delivered through her violence! Chloe Moretz is an amazing young actress, she’s going to go a long way in the movie business. Nicolas Cage and Christopher Mintz-Plasse (McLovin) round out the cast and are both quality and likable as the remaining heroes of  the troop. The scene were Nicolas Cage is testing his daughters flak jacket by shooting her with a handgun was offbeat and hilarious.

"Mask Up, Bitches!"

Surprisingly, this movie has a ton of violent gory kills. I was expecting a lighthearted teenage coming of age tale, and what I got was Aqua Teen Hunger Force meets Kill Bill. Wow is little Mindy McCready a force to be reckoned with. She impales people with spears, slashes throats, shoots faces off and many other acts of uber violence. This little girl rocked my socks!

Final Head Count

I loved this movie from beginning to end, it’s probably the most fun I’ve had watching a movie in a long, long time.  If every film completely shattered my expectations like this flick did, I would be a very happy camper. My next visit to the Mall, I’m grabbing this flick. I need it for my collection. It’s that goddamn “Kick Ass!”
