Dead Mary Movie Review

Directed By: Robert Wilson

Written By: Peter Shelrick, Christopher Warre Smets

Starring: Dominique Swain, Marie- Josee Colburn, Steven McCarthy

Story:

A group of friends head out to a cabin in the woods to party despite their current disputes with one another (Evil Dead anyone?). One of the couples awkwardly try to get along with one another as friends after what seems, judging by the tension between them, a harsh break-up. The ugliest dude in the group brings the best looking girl to the cabin and somehow is able to ‘mack’ on the other ‘taken’ girls with ease. At this point, after all but losing their women to ‘Fugly,’ the group should already know something is strange with this cabin. Trying to break the ice with the new girl and have some ‘old school’ fun, the friends decide to play ‘Dead Mary’, which they explain to be the cooler version of ‘Bloody Mary’ , or more likely the Bloody Mary name is already copyright.

Characters:

The characters sit around the entire movie talking about how things were when they last met up. It’s obvious, through the dialogue, the creators are trying to develope the characters so you will sympathize with their later battle, but the characters are so dry and wooden you’ll get the urge to throw matches at the screen with hopes they will burn to cinders. Dead Mary is a witch trapped in the mirror who possesses those who call on her by speaking her name three times. She hides in the bodies of the group giving them a distrust in one another.

Special Effects / Gore:

The effects aren’t bad for the mirror witch and, once discovered, her features show through the face of the possessed. All kills are off screen, if you want to see uncut versions just watch ‘Evil Dead’ again as this is just a poor grade soulless rip-off of the classic.

Final Score:

I haven’t been this bored through a movie since my wife begged me to watch Sex in the City: The Movie with her (just say no, boys!), and after seeing those women the thought of them performing the act gives me the distinct taste of vomit on my tongue, this phantom bad taste re-occurs at the thought of sitting through ‘Dead Mary’!
If you want to see a decent Bloody Mary flick I recommend Urban Legends: Bloody Mary, it’s not great, but to my knowledge it was miles above this heap.
