Rampage Movie Review

Story

Bill Williamson is a young man who is mad at the world. He feels ripped off, under-appreciated, invisible and insignificant. Oh and his parents want to kick him out of the house because he’s 25 and jobless. Suffice it to say, he snaps. Big time. He wants to be noticed, be someone that isn’t written off and he does just that by building a full-body Kevlar suit and going on a killing spree.

Characters:

Bill Williamson: the young man who wants his revenge on society, is a character that a lot of people may be able to relate to in some ways and is one of the most interesting movie characters I have seen in a long time. He is full of angst and does not have much left going for him.

Mortician: While Bill Williamson is the most extreme example of a man snapping under the pressures and responsibilities of life, the struggle to transition from adolescence to adulthood is one that many teens and young adults deal with, often feeling insignificant, inconsequential and minuscule in the grand scheme of things. This movie portrays a man gone off the deep end, one that couldn’t cope with growing up and moving on with his life.

Watching this film, I didn’t see a man that was shit on and had nothing left to lose. I saw a man who had incorrect expectations of life, and believed he should be given special treatment and believed he was being singled out and treated unfairly, which clearly he was not. The worst his loving Mom and Dad asked of him was to get a job and move out, which is a transition everyone needs to make at some point in their lives. He was resentful, full of spite and mentally ill. Normal interactions with ignorant and rude customer service staff at restaurants and the coffee shop that would only irritate and bother a regular functioning human being, were huge problems and slaps in Bill’s face enough to further fuel his rage and hatred.

Gore/Special Effects:

The gore is pretty good in this movie, it isn’t anything special, but it does not disappoint as there are about 70+ people killed on camera, expect a good amount of gore watching this movie and a lot of action.

Lasting Appeal:

Uwe Boll is known for making some fairly brutal movies and I do not use that word lightly, I was never a fan of any of his previous films, but it seems when he is working with an original idea of his own he can deliver a good film and lots of entertainment, this movie proves that.

I enjoyed this movie more than I have any movie this year really, having watched it already two times within the last 24 hours of writing this review, I haven’t gotten bored of it yet.

Final Head Count:

While the movie could have been better, it definitely lived up to my expectations and proved to be better than what I had first expected.

The main character will suck you in and really make you think about some things and with a very interesting ending this movie, to me, is a masterpiece.

Mortician: I’m right there with ya Baal. I too have disliked Uwe Boll’s  older films. He doesn’t want people to shit on his earlier films but they are some of the worst the genre has to offer.

That being said Rampage was, as you said, far better than any of his previous efforts. I wouldn’t go so far as to give the movie a perfect score though. While it was a step up from his previous efforts it’s not hard to surpass films that are so amateurish and terrible to begin with. Rampage isn’t mind blowing or overly original, (Falling Down is a much better film about a man fed up with the system and snapping) but it was entertaining and watchable and I think it’s a step in the right direction for old Uwe. I’m giving Rampage a 3/5.

GodzMassacre: I don’t believe Uwe Boll necessarily deserves all the insults that are tossed his way weekly. I respect that he has the guts to step away from the average yuppy filmmakers to literally say “Fuck you, if you don’t like my movies”. He obviously does like his movies, even those that make little money he seems proud of. Seed was one of the meanest, disturbed, and yes sometimes even scariest movies of the past 5 years, and yet sits at a 2.7/10 on imdb. Blood Rayne, House of the Dead, and Far Cry were all acceptably entertaining movies when taken at face value even if they didn’t blow away the expectations audiences had.

Rampage is definitely one of Boll’s better movies, and while I agree that Falling Down is the better movie, Rampage has much more social significance to today’s young adults. I also agree, Baal, the guy was pretty much bored of having a good life, he was craving chaos. I’ll give Rampage a 3.5/5
