Santo and Blue Demon v.s. Dracula and The Wolfman Movie Review

The Story:

Santo and his girlfriend Lina go to visit her uncle, Professor Cristaldi, who is later kidnapped by Eric (a descendant of Dracula’s servants). Eric kills the professor in a ritual to resurrect Dracula and The Wolfman, who were killed by the Cristaldi family, using a magic dagger and seven eclipses of the sun and moon over 400 years ago. Will Santo, with the help of his friend Blue Demon, be able to stop the legendary horror icons’ revenge scheme against his girlfriend and the remaining Cristaldi family?

The Characters:

Santo is the classic hero every woman wants, and every man wants to be. He’s a fashionable romantic, a masked fighter and detective all rolled into one suplexing package. Little is learned in this outing of Blue Demon. We know he has exceptional mat skills, is of a high class and respect, and has a close friendship with fellow amateur detective Santo. Both Dracula and the Wolfman are played as handsome romantics seducing the young Cristaldi women in hopes of destroying the magic dagger and killing the remaining Cristaldi blood line.

Effects/Gore:

The movie takes a more classic approach to gore that is reminiscent of Hammer studios subtleties. The makeup and costumes borrow heavily from the traditional Universal Monsters design with a more retro-70’s-groovy sense of style. The same can be said of the design of the movie as a whole.

Lasting Appeal:

The movie plays out as a slow, plodding detective story with horror aspects dropped in place of the villainous norm. I look forward to seeing it again knowing now that it is a more traditional detective story than the horror movie I was expecting.

Final Headcount:

Santo and Blue Demon v.s. Dracula and the Wolfman can be best described as a slightly more violent adult-themed “Scooby Doo” episode, nothing more and certainly nothing less.
“…And I would have gotten away with it too, if it weren’t for you meddling masked wrestlers!”
