The Story:
A group of humans return to Sirius 6-B to investigate an S.O.S. signal sent in the midst of a devastating solar storm that’s about to massacre the planet. On arrival, the humans find survivors sheltered by an old military outpost, and after learning the Screamer’s new disguise methods the question soon becomes: Who is real and Who is an alien cyborg?
I could complain about the movie stealing from “The Thing” and the later attempt at smuggling a Screamer back to Earth being borrowed from “Aliens”, but it makes sense for the story and I feel sometimes we are too quick to judge and compare such obvious story arcs. If the military is involved in something dangerous they are sure to want a piece for their own benefit, and aliens surely want to hide amongst us for their own purposes, get over it.
I won’t defend the story surrounding “The Hunting” any further as there barely is one. ‘Screamers: The Hunting’ was made for one purpose and that is an excuse to explore the potential variety of Screamers the first film hinted at and of course to make a quick buck too.
Characters:
The characters are comprised of a group of generic soldiers and researchers who are combating the alien threat. The only performance that is memorable comes from sci-fi/horror veteran Lance Henrikson, unfortunately it is short lived as he is served up as fodder sooner than other more deserving parties. All the characters are nothing more than appetizers and entrees for the new and improved Screamers to chew up.
Effects/Gore:
One thing I was disappointed with in the first feature was the lack of gore. Limbs which were sawed off to stumps were only highlighted for the most part by a miniscule mist of blood. In this sequel that mist has been replaced by a fountain of the red stuff! The Screamers shred their victims to pieces with their abnormal strength and hidden circular saws. The impressive effects on the Screamers and the gore they cause warrant argument in favor of this unnecessary sequel’s existence.
Final Headcount:
Bottom line: the gore was more than satisfying; and seeing the expanded variety of the Screamers was well worth my time. If you would like another helping of Screamers even if it means going without the quality story and acting of the original than I recommend you check this flick out. The movie is decently paced, and would serve as a fun second half to a Screamers double feature.
