X Movie Review

In our X movie review we take a look at Ti West's latest horror flick. Is X worth your time or is it a stale product from a by-gone era?
X Movie Review

What Is X About?

X is a movie set in the late 70s about a group of filmmakers headed out to rural Texas. They have big dreams of cashing in on the upcoming home video market by shooting a porno movie.

The rural farm they end up at is very reminiscent of the Sawyer farm from the Texas Chainsaw Massacre. Shit is about to go sideways for our band of adult stardom hopefuls.

An Homage to 70s Exploitation Cinema

X very much feels like a film influenced by the gems of the exploitation area.

I was picking of flavours of the Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Eaten Alive and Motel Hell. I enjoyed the meal that was served up and baked with these classic ingredients.

Like these classics from before it, X had a lot build up before the mayhem ensued. Ti West is a master of building palatable dread in his films and everything ramps up to a tipping point. His creative use of audio cues and visual juxtaposition were fantastic in this one.

The film also had a great 70s soundtrack, vehicles, environment and old school nudity. Things that aren’t used in movies in a new me too world, this one served as a cool throwback film that felt like it was made in another era.

Is Ti West’s Latest Movie Good?

The only area I felt the movie was lacking was in the special effects and creativity department. The kills could have been more original and utilized some set pieces in unique ways to ramp up the shock factor. The kills were pretty run of the mill and nothing stood out as a great effect or anything that I hadn’t seen before.

I’d recommend checking out X if you’re into the exploitation flicks from days gone. It was an entertaining homage to a great era of cinema. An era that often pushed the envelope and the audience to their breaking points. It didn’t quite hit on the same level as these classics but I felt it was still very well done and entertaining.
